ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

This is mainly an artistic project. it involves my Robot Nao 1337 and was featured at the Robot Film Festival 2011. Nao 1337 is looking for a job; times are hard for unemployed robots. Now, he has a chance to pass an audition for an important role. He tries his best to impersonate many popular robots including Wall-e, Terminator, R2D2, Johnny 5, and a Dalek. Should he get the job? Only time will tell.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

I started doing this project early in 2011 but, as always, I ended up finishing at th very last minute and could barely submit it for the Robot Film Festival in april if I recall correctly. It took five days of programming, one day of filming and one day of editing.

What was your goal in building this project?

I wanted to use my robot to create a video people can relate to, and that would show most of his features. I also wanted to become more efficient at making animations with my robot.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

No. If anything, it helped generate lots of problems involving programming, filming, accessories, and a wannabe actor robot.

What makes your idea unique?

The fact that this transpose human problem (finding a job, auditioning) into a robotic setting and the it uses a real robot that performs the actions for real.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

Nao 1337 is incredibly advanced ans uses bearing in every joint, and it had 25 of those. Without bearings, the motion could not be as fluid and the robot would ware out pretty fast.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

This video was featured in the first Robot Film Festival. Nao 1337 and I even attended the festival and 1337 had a chance to walk on the red carpet. That's right, Nao 1337 is the first robot to walk on the red carpet to go see its film.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

I am a tinkerer and a maker at heart. If I was to win any price, I will most likely use it to make more projects. I love making things and to share them with anybody interested in my blog: http://carlitoscontraptions.com/ If I was to win the big price, I would save it and invest it in one of the biggest projects I have yet to do: getting my own house.
