Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another
The Solar Charged Remote Control Electric Lawn Mower (SCRCELM) is a device that is purely electric. That means, no gasoline is required to operate any component on the SCRCELM. The SCRCELM comprises an aluminum body that has two 20W 12v solar panels attached, a rechargeable electric lawn mower, two electric wheelchair motors, and other electronics. This project was built to help reduce the carbon footprint that standard gas powered push lawn mowers cause, as well as develop a more enjoyable way for cutting the lawn.
When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?
I officially started working on this project in mid July 2010. It was not until May 2011 that I heavily started to work on the project every other day of the week. I finished the project in November 2011. The total amount of man-hours consumed to construct the SCRCELM was approximately 130 hours.
What was your goal in building this project?
My primary goal in building this project was to design and build a device that did not rely on gasoline, incorporated solar energy technology, and to show others through video how I built the device.
Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?
My project does help to solve a problem. Gas powered lawn mowers represent over 5% of air pollution. They can produce as much air pollution as 43 cars driving 12,000 miles. Additionally, 17 million gallons of gasoline is spilled per year while filling up lawn mowers, which can lead to groundwater contamination and smog. This result from the increased air pollution can affect individuals with asthma, increase the greenhouse effect, produce acid rains, and more.
What makes your idea unique?
What makes my idea unique is the implementation of solar energy technology and no reliance on gasoline. There are many remote control (RC) lawn mowers out there already, however, many have not incorporated solar energy, a rechargeable electric lawn mower, and remote control technology into a single unit.
In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?
the solar device did not require bearings, bearings are located in the lawnmower.
What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?
The most important thing I want people to know about my project is the benefits it has on the environment and on human health.
How will you use the $10,000 prize?
The way that I would use the $10,000 prize is, I would invest it in future projects such as a RC weed eater or attachment for the SCRCELM, or invest it in better machining tools that would ease the process for constructing future devices.
