Ganesha- A robot drummer
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another
My goal is to build a traveling show of robot drummers that back me up. I want my sculptures to transform and amaze people. It's a little bit performance art, a little bit theater, and lot's of rock and roll fun!
When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?
I started prototyping robot drummers and building circuits about 3 years ago. I use a lot of found materials on the outside but the inside is high tech custom fabricated moving parts
What was your goal in building this project?
To do something no one has ever done. The reactions I have gotten from showing them have been amazing. I want to teach kids about basic robotics and start a movement of kinetic musical sculptures
Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?
Drummers are always pain in the butt. They drink your beer and steal your girlfriend or boyfriend. Robot for drummer- PROBLEM SOLVED!
What makes your idea unique?
I am going beyond just building a robot that plays drums like a human. I am creating new sounds and new rhythms by builing REAL moving machines that play real drums. The sounds created can only be made with this machine.
In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?
I use metal bearing turntables in the rotating head. There is a slip ring transfering electricity through the middle of the bearing. The bearing supports the head of the elephant sculpture which has a slide projector mounted inside
What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?
This is the future of electronic music live performance
How will you use the $10,000 prize?
To buy more electric motors from surplus center, pneumatic valves, solenoids, aluminum, and many other components for my future build.
"My fingers emit sparks of fire with expectation of my future labours"
