Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

This is a caster designed primarily for use in a household or office environment to make it easier to move furniture.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

Ive been working on the detail of the design for over four years, trying to perfect the materials to be used, the final shape of the model, size and shape of cavity/ friction area.

What was your goal in building this project?

My goal was to develop a product that will assist primarily women and the elderly to move household furniture around the house.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

The Easyslide caster assists to move light to medium weight furniture over tiled, wooden and certain carpeted floors in any direction with much less effort than it would take to move the furniture without the Easyslide.

What makes your idea unique?

The Easyslide has the following unique characteristics: - It can move in any direction (other similar products only allow forward or backward movement) - It can be made with a much thinner height, allowing less height restriction where items such as washing machines, dish washers, etc need to be moved in and out from under kitchen counters or tables where there is a height restriction. (other similar products that allow malty directional movement tend to be restricted to their minimul hight, preventing their use where there is a height restriction) - It is cost effective (estimated cost for 4 Easyslide casters to be under $5) - The final shape of the Easyslide will allow them to slot together like a puzzle into a “mat”, reducing the friction level with each additional caster added.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

For the prototype, each Easyslide caster was made using 25 teflon ball bearings because of their availability and low friction coefficient. The final product will be made using plastic ball bearings. The bearings are the primary method used to reduce the friction and enable the item to be moved along the floor.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

It is a cost effective method to enable people, especially women and the elderly, to move furniture in n household or office environment in any direction without the need for lifting the item. It also creates wider opportunities to use on items where there is a height restriction. The ability to slot the Easyslide casters together into an unlimited size, also make it ideal to move boxes around the house without the need to lift them. The product does not aim to create a friction free caster that can be used on any surface with any weight applied, but merely a caster that will significantly reduce the amount of friction, thereby reducing the amount of effort needed to move household and office items around in any direction.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

I will use the prize to fund the final design sketches and the construction of the plastic mould needed to produce the final product for the market. If my project is a success, some of the profits from my business will be used to continue to assist Scott Worley, who runs the Land of the Living non-proffit organization where one of the aims is to identify up and coming business men and women in under privileged communities in East London South Africa who need assistance in starting their own business.
