ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

The function of this project (not just the puffin you see here) has many purposes as i have become to learn over the years. From pest control to theatre props, this project has even surprised me as to how far it can go. I had previously built a hawk used for pest control in and around city's, along with an owl that will allow us to carry out research on other raptors. The list is endless to what can be build and to what area it can be useful for. I find new ideas and i have new enquiries all the time from people who have different uses for my birds.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

This is a project that has been backed by 5 or 6 years of R&d into mechanical birds. Having built several species of birds, it has allowed me to hit many different areas of the market. (more explained lower down)

What was your goal in building this project?

The first goal was to supply a bird as a lure (owl) so that other birds (hawks) would swoop down to scare of the owl and by doing so a conservationist could capture the hawk in order to tag them and take vital readings used to help keep an eye on the population. With more and more uses for these birds coming in all the time it becoming a very exciting part to play.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

Yes. several actually. - Pest control (the animatronic hawk will allow the safe use of city pest control that will cost a fraction of the price used to obtain real life decoys) - keeping a closer eye on Bird population in a safe and humane way (Conservationist used to use live lures and this would cause stress to the lure... with the animatronics it solves this issue.) -

What makes your idea unique?

Its unique in the sense that the market for such 'is growing. And more people (with in the avian industry) are becoming aware of there uses .. Also No one else is doing it. Well plastic decoys just dont work very well.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

The bearings used do really depend on the project itself however with the puffin, it uses 14 8mm flanged bearings.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

I am passionate about this project and even though i have entered this competition 3 times now and each year i enter a new design funded by myself i am still very determined to move it forward with your help.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

The prize fund would go into the manufacturing area of my work. Im currently out saucing manufacturing and this comes at a higher cost. should i be given the chance to obtain the space / machines and technology i need then i can keep the costs down for my clients as well as it helping push my work into the next stage of development.
