Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

OutRunner is the world's first legged running robot that is commercially available to the public. That's right—a running robot! OutRunner is eating up the competition with amazing capabilities: self-balancing, running up to 20 mph on almost any types of terrains (grass, asphalt, dirt...) with up to 2 hours of battery life, extremely simple to operate and upgradable. There is simply no other robot with such capabilities and so easy and fun to play with. All you need to do is just press the accelerator and steer it wherever you want it to go; it's that easy. Let the fun begin!

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

It took us about a year to figure out how to make a robot run. We proved that the science works and are now in the final stage of development

What was your goal in building this project?

Why are robots doing great things only in movies? Why is it that the only people enjoying robots right now are scientists or engineers? At Robotics Unlimited, we are tired of these trends and are on a journey to change this status-quo. We believe that robots should be a part of everybody's life and that they should be easy and fun to interact with while still doing amazing things. OutRunner is here to prove that to you.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

Yes, our project improve science, improve robotics. It's extremely hard to figure out how to get a robot to run in an efficient way. By having the legs of the robot spring loaded we recycle energy at each steps throughout the gait. A rc car with the same battery will last for 20 minutes max, our robot can run for 2 hours. This is a huge advancement in robotics. Legs are also extremely good are overcoming obstacles and running on a large variety of terrain. You can check a video of OutRunner doing off road right here:

What makes your idea unique?

Well, there is no robot with the same capabilities in the world. OutRunner is the fastest running robot in the world (one of our prototype run over 30 mph on road), among the most efficient, and self-stable, there is no complex control algorithm to maintain its balance. It doesn't cost hundred of thousands (or millions of dollars) like other legged robot that you usually see in research laboratory, yet as better performance. OutRunner will retail between $299 and $799. That's a big difference. We have been able to make robots affordable and we are leading this revolution. You don't need a PhD to use it! If you know how to drive a rc card you'll know how to use it

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

We are using bearings for spinning the wheels and are using standard bearings

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

We are here to bring robots in people hands, to make them affordable and easy to use. Our first product, OutRunner, is totally awesome and extremely fun to play with.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

We will use the prize to improve the design of OutRunner and design some upgrades so people can tune it and improve its performance!
