ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

The vehicle is custom built using only the Power Wheels jeep body. The frame is welded steel. The drivetrain consists of a large DC motor, 24 volt battery, 2-stage gear reduction, and disk brakes. The project will be an entry into the Power Racing Series races coming up (imagine a herd of these tiny vehicles that everyone has built their own way all racing)

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

The project was started in 2013 and took around 6 months to complete.

What was your goal in building this project?

The goal in building the project was to learn new skills like welding, metal fabrication, gear-train design, and others. I wanted the end product to be as finished and lifelike as possible.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

As for whether the project solves a problem, one could argue it helps cure curiosity for learning.

What makes your idea unique?

The tiny vehicle is definitely unique in its scale and realistic appearance.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

The little Jeep uses shielded flange bearings in its front wheels, thrust bearings in the steering section, shielded flange bearings to support the rear axle, and still more flanged bearings supporting the sprocket reduction shafts. The motor employs a couple of tiny bearings.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

This project was all hand built in my garage (I am a DIYer with no formal training in any of this). I LOVE building crazy contraptions (my other projects include a gas turbine jet engine, and a bartending robot)

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

I would use the $5,000 prize to purchase more tools...I would love to have a laser cutter or 3D printer to help me take my projects to the next level.
