Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

This is a motorized kinetic sculpture that features a sound component.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

Work on the sculpture began in the Fall of 2001 and was completed about three months later in early 2002.

What was your goal in building this project?

The sculpture was created as a response to the tragedy of 9/11. The idea of trying to infuse a bit of humor and good feeling back into the world seemed like a good one.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

The project was successful in attempting to be a cathartic response to 9/11 and has brought smiles to many children and adults ever since.

What makes your idea unique?

The sculpture is unique because no where in the world is there another pair of plastic carrots dancing atop a spinning globe to the whistled soundtrack of "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy".

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

All moving parts of this sculpture are supported by bearings. In total there are fifteen flanged roller bearings and one non-flanged. The smooth, quiet and reliable operation of the mechanism would not be possible without the bearings. This sculpture has been exhibited in galleries many, many times over the past decade and has logged in hundreds of hours of operation. It has never once needed repair.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

Its important for people to know how the project came to be and that its a one-of-a-kind sculpture. I'd also like people to know that it was made by me and that its for sale. For more information please visit my website @

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

The prize money would gratefully be used to finance the continued creation of unique kinetic sculptures.
