Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

This chair is a fully functional electric wheelchair that also is a piece of moving art that attracts a lot of attention. The tailgating chair for the disabled, allows people with disabilities a chance to enjoy tailgating on an eye to eye level with their friends and others who enjoy tailgating. All the things that are needed for tailgating are all located right on the chair and can be removed easily when not needed.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

I started on this project after attending my first Tailgating event at the Cardinals Stadium in Phoenix. Most of people had a BBQ and various other items like an ice chest, flat screen TV, Tables, Stereo, Beverage holders – but they were scattered around or not in one place. I also noticed the people in wheelchairs participated but really did not cook or enjoy the event on an eye to eye level with the others. After that day I went home and started building the tailgating chair. It took about 4 weeks of working after my regular job at night and weekend to complete this project.

What was your goal in building this project?

The goal of this project is to allow disabled people the right to enjoy and partake in tailgating, the fastest growing sport in America, along with everyone else on the same level. The chair functions as a regular wheelchair but at eye-level with other tailgating participants, it has everything need for an enjoyable tailgating event in one handy location.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

Yes. The problem is that people with disabilities should have the ability to enjoy life like everyone else without others having to help or make exceptions for them. Everyone is different, and wheelchairs should reflect the difference of their users. Not everyone wants to be in the same “medical looking style” wheelchair when they could be in a cool one-of-a-kind chair that reflects their personality and lifestyle.

What makes your idea unique?

Currently I have not seen a similar product for the disabled that allows a person to have everything needed in one place for tailgating.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

The main component on which the chair is built on is four self-contained radial bearings in the drive motors, with the varying weight of different people with disabilities using the chair and the added weight of the BBQ and all the special equipment installed. Boca Bearings give us the reliability and trust needed to provide safe and dependable service for our chair users.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

I want people to know that just because someone has a disability it not stop them from doing the things they love and am able to live a challenging and productive life. The chair can be used for all kind of things not just tailgating. Following are a few features on the chair that most wheelchairs do not have: • A rear facing video camera that shows the driver what is currently behind them on the Tablet mounted on the front of the chair.( Very Important!) • A stainless BBQ that can be taken off easily and replaced with shopping basket or other accessories • Full internet and charging station for cellphone and accessories • Small Ice chest and BBQ utensils • Swiveling cup holder • Head lights, reading light and programmable warnings lights • Two horns and one siren • Cell phone holder • Built in self-defense system, • Digital voltage display and built in chair charger

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

If we win the $5,000, we plan on using the funds to buy batteries for the electric scooters and wheelchairs that we gift out every week to deserving people in our community. If we win one of the 3D printers, we would use the machine to make nameplates and various plastic parts we currently have to buy for the mobility devices from outside vendors. If we win one of the go pro cameras, we would gift it to one of our chair or scooter recipients and would ask them to get some great footage of them using their mobility device so we could place video on our web site
