Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

The Skate /Bike Thing came out of the GLEAN Portland Artist residency I'm currently in. For 5 months we 5 Artists were given access to the Sorting facility/ Pre- "dump" reclamation center to "glean" our materials from. This Month, all our works are displayed at a local gallery and feature 10 pieces from each Artist. I'm an Artist with a little design background. The pieces I gathered just kinda' came together. I was hung up on steering but,the skateboard feel seemed to work best. More a Design with existing parts experiment than a purely aesthetic sculpture.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

Started mid May. Then came back to it several times over 4 months. Around 40 hrs in construction.

What was your goal in building this project?

To start a thought or conversation on possible uses of discarded bicycles, scooters and even cars. The amount of metals in circulation could halt the mining of new resources for decades if Manufacturers of these goods would look towards recycling / reclamation for their future needs.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

Uses up a little metal and tires that would have ended up in the city dump!

What makes your idea unique?

Off Road Skates or skateboards, what few exist aren't made from %100 recycled materials!

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

Bearings are crucial in the skate bike! The skate rolls very easily no matter how much weight I put on it. Actually the more weight, the better it rolled! I'm using bicycle wheel bearings / ball bearing in sleeves and most important, a pair of roller bearings in sleeves for the front, detachable/interchangeable wheels. the wheels axle sits inside the sleeve, keeping tension and a smooth spin.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

Before you buy something new, can the old one be repaired, upgraded, donated? The problem isn't the amount of good materials we waste as a society but, the cheap manufacturing practices of big "consumable" goods producers. ReUse Recycle Reclaim whenever possible, Think before ya buy.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

Contribute to The GLEAN Program for future Artists and maybe get more people in on making "alt" transportation from reclaimed materials!
