Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

The Eclips3D is a fully functional 3D printer which can be used to create intricate 3D prints using plastic and other exotic plastic-based materials. This printer can handle just about any job you throw at it, no matter how difficult.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

I started working on this project in March of 2015 and I just finished no more than a few weeks ago. Overall, I have put in hundreds of hours into this project in order to ensure the final result is as high quality as possible, and I believe the results speak for themselves.

What was your goal in building this project?

My project was designed in order to bring incredibly high quality 3D printing to the masses for the smallest price possible. I have made my design 100% open sourced as I believe everyone deserves to be able to take this design and build it for themselves, or even make their own modifications to it!

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

This printer solves many problems that, before consumer 3D printing became mainstream, would have been unheard of. The Eclips3D can not only print replacement plastic parts to fix broken objects, but it can also produce custom engineered components or works of art. All is now possible with a high quality and highly precise 3D printer.

What makes your idea unique?

The Eclips3D is one of the first fully open-sourced 3D printers to not only produce incredibly high quality prints, but to do so at high speeds, minimal noise levels, and as efficiently as possible. On top of that, my design isn't just open sourced in that I release what you need to buy, but I am releasing the full set of 3D part files for all custom pieces, as well as a comprehensive BOM and instruction manual. I am trying to make it as easy as possible for anyone to build one of these printers!

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

There are 3 different bearings used in this printer. There are flanged radial bearings to guide the belt, oil free bearings on the x and y axis to reduce noise, and flanged linear ball bearings on the z axis for maximum rigidity.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

In 3 words, quality, speed, and ease of use. This printer produces incredibly high quality prints, incredibly quickly, and just about anyone can not only use it, but also build it!

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

I would use the $5000 prize in order to fund additional research on ways and parts to improve the current Eclips3D. I would also use a portion to purchase a CNC mill so that I could more efficiently obtain the CNC cut plates I normally source out to other people.
