Tell us briefly about your project. Is it a work of art or does it serve another function?

Up-Ride is the bicycle to elliptical conversion kit. This is a new and unique approach to providing low impact exercise by providing an accessory to your bicycle to simulate running either in a stationary or mobile capacity.

When did you start working on this project and how long did it take you to complete?

Up-Ride has been in development for the last two years. The first prototype took a couple months. The second prototype a similar amount of time. This is the third iteration. It has been a collaboration with former engineers from The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

What was your goal in building this project?

I want to provide low impact, affordable, flexible exercise to anyone who wants it whatever their physical challenges or lifestyle. This means I want to make a mass market good with distribution that you can find in your friendly web browser or your local retailer.

Does your project help to solve a problem? If so what problem?

Elliptical provides low impact exercise for injured athletes, baby boomers, and the suburban family. People find going to the gym time consuming, expensive, and requires more than a minimum threshold effort. Low impact exercise equipment tends to be expensive often costing thousands of dollars for good quality equipment. These machines are heavy and take up a lot of space. They usually only have a single functionality (running, rowing, stepping etc). Up-Ride resolves these difficulties in use and cost.

What makes your idea unique?

Up-Ride provides a high quality elliptical experience in minutes all in your living room. This is the first bicycle to exercise equipment conversion coming to the market. The kit gives the ability to do stationary bicycle, stationary elliptical, and mobile elliptical. This all without permanently modifying your bike, change functionality in minutes. Up-Ride is a patent pending technology. This is totally different than things that have existed previously. There are some really cool implications of this technology.

In what capacity are you using bearings and what type of bearings?

Sets of radial bearings in all of the clevises ( 6 per elliptical arm). I used a off the shelf modified stationary trainer which is using some sort of bearing/rolling resistance system. Bushings may also be used in the crank conversion in the future to smooth the connection.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your project?

Up-Ride came out of my real need to get low impact cardio exercise. I do long distance triathlon and have a kind of juvenile arthritis. This will help me and a lot of other people. Much of the preventable death in the first world comes from poor lifestyle choices. I believe that making exercise more accessible and affordable really makes the world a better place in a impactful way.

How will you use the $5,000 prize?

I want to go to Taiwan to create the relationships with factories for a complete supply chain to make Up-Ride into a reality. I have done the basic prototyping, force analysis, cost analysis, and market analysis. While there are definitely areas that can be improved, the ground work for design for manufacture is in place. This is a real product that just needs a little more money to get to crowdfunding pre-sale and then mass market distribution. There are also some patent costs that are still ongoing and a little extra cash would be helpful. I also have some other prototyping I want to do involving bicycles and bearing systems for some pretty awesome future projects.
